Hon. Acting Col.Secretary.
I attach schedule shewing subscriptions during
the last five years for which accounts are published. From the
it will be seen that more than half the subscriptions come
from guilds who have subscribed regularly about the same
amount. Under the other headings there are considerable varia-
tions, and though the decrease in these items in 1895 is very
considerable,1896 shews almost a complete recovery. I am in-
formed that there is no fear of any substantial reduction in
the subscriptions to the hospital, and I know that the opposi-
tion to the appointment of Dr. Thomson and Dr. Chung is very
much less than it was.
I may add that at the last election there was
very active canvassing against Mr. Fung Wa Chun, who represents
the progressive party. The Conservative opposition prevented
his appointment as one of the three Chief Directors. This was
because he recommended in 1896 that the hospital itself
should engage a Chinese trained in Western Medical Science.
Dr. Thomson is responsible for the correct re-
port of the causes of death of any person in the hospital, a
he sees every patient or dead body brought in.
